While walking on a hot steamy Atlanta afternoon in July of 1988, a beautiful Irish Setter decided to follow me. We walked in concert for about a mile. Very undernourished and not wearing identification, she continued to follow me. Suddenly she ran into the road and was struck by a passing car. I sat on the side of that road for two and half hours holding her while waiting for animal control. I fell in love with her during our long wait. Her hip was broken and after emergency care she was taken to the Cobb County Animal Shelter for adoption. An animal with her injuries would have been deemed undesirable and put down. After waiting the required 7 days I adopted her and brought her home.

Little did I know she would become my greatest gift. When you save a dog’s life I’m convinced they know it. Her gentle and sweet spirit was unfailing. In 1992 she returned the favor of her rescue. While we walked late one night a Pit Bull broke through its master’s window and charged me. Lucy jumped in front of me and took the dog’s attack. Although her front left leg was badly mauled she once again recovered.

Lucy died in my arms January 1, 1999. She loved life, loved unconditionally, and is still missed every day.

My store has been a lifelong dream and is dedicated to Lucy’s memory. Thank you for reading her story. Please support animal rescue, fostering and adoption.
